The attachment program’s objectives are to transfer skills and knowledge of nematode experts in Japan to the participants, strengthen the diagnostic capacity by providing practical understanding on concepts, identification and management practices on plant parasitic nematodes, and for the trained participants to be the potential ASEAN resource persons on nematology for the benefit of all ASEAN member states and ASEAN Diagnostic Network.

The emerging and re-emerging diseases caused by viruses are perhaps the most devastating ones and require immediate attention and remedies due to the manner of disease transmission, spread and distribution across wide geographical locations. Begomoviruses are remarkably the most successful group of emerging viruses (Briddon et al. 2010; Rojas & Gilbertson 2008).

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) cause serious problems in agricultural crops throughout the world from tropical to cold part of agricultural region. Especially, in tropical and subtropical region, such as South-East Asia where agriculture occupies an important position in the economy, PPNs proliferate so quickly at high growth rate that crops sometimes suffer considerably high yield loss.

The Phase 2 project was approved by JAIF for implementation from 15th July 2019 to 14th July 2020 after drawing positive responses from ASEAN member states.
