Training Workshop on Diagnostic of Citrus Greening Disease (Huanglongbing)
Date: 20th - 24th March, 2006
The Training Workshop on Diagnostics of Citrus Greening Disease (Hunglongbing) was organised by CABI-SEARC/ASEANET on behalf of the SPS Capacity Building Program (SPS CBP) at the Agriculture Research Centre (ARC), Department of Agriculture Sarawak, Kuching, Sarawak , Malaysia from 20 to 24 March 2006.

It was attended by 16 participants, one participant each from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia , Laos , Myanmar , Singapore , Thailand and Vietnam ; three participants from Malaysia and five participants from Indonesia.

Downloads The objective of this activity is to improve regional diagnostic capacity and understanding of the new, draft international diagnostic standard for Citrus Greening Disease (CGD or Huang-longbing - HLB). The opening ceremony was done by Mr. Lai Kui Fong, Senior Assistant Director for Research of ARC , Department of Agriculture Sarawak.

Topics Presented

  • An introduction to the citrus greening disease (CGD), its etiology, epidemiology, symptomatology , its effects on the citrus industry and its management
  • CGD vector and its management
  • Identification of CGD vector & its parasitoids
  • Diagnosis of CGD: Theories on sampling, DNA extraction, PCR & gel electrophoresis
  • Production of disease-free planting material: micro-propagation and budwood grafting
  • ISPM Standard on Diagnostic Protocol & a draft standard for Citrus Greening Disease

At the end of the workshop, evaluations were conducted by Dr. Lily Eng. Certificate of attendance were also given to the participants

Field trips to Nyan Mei Nursery and Rimba Padi orchard were also organised to see the production of CGD-free planting materials of citrus and CGD-infected areas and observed typical symptoms in the field as well as their vectors.
